Seattle Daytrip to Diablo Lake

The Ross Lake National Recreation Area is simply stunning. We visited the main drag (Highway 20) during our day trip to North Cascades National Park and fell in love with the turquoise waters of Diablo Lake. Seriously, check it out: That amazing turquoise color is not altered digitally (#nofilter) and provides an amazing contrast to the forest-covered mountains around it. This phenomenon is caused by glacial flour that is suspended in water. For those with inquiring minds, you can read up on glacial, or rock flour here. Because you stayed with me through the nerdy stuff, I’m going to...

North Cascades National Park, an Easy Day Trip from Seattle

Whenever we start planning a trip, I always take a few minutes to look at the National Park Service website to see if there are any National Parks or other park service units that we have yet to visit. Having been to Seattle previously, I thought we would have covered most of the sites, but I was wrong and had myself wondering how in the heck we had missed North Cascades National Park on our epic 10,000 road trip back in 2009?! Back to the Real World

For the past two years, my online presence has pretty much been running on silence. Shortly after I enrolled in a graduate school, I realized certain things would have to be dropped from my life if I wanted to add graduate school to my already busy life. This realization came after I found myself getting frustrated that I didn’t have enough time to be on social media after allotting time to work, family, and school. Las Vegas Day Trip to Valley of Fire State Park

After a recent work trip to Las Vegas, I stayed an extra 2 days to visit with family and friends. While I could have spent all my time with my loved ones, I made sure to leave enough time in my schedule to explore the desert (which was much needed after working a conference for four days straight). Typically, I head out to Red Rock Canyon as it is close to where our family lives and can easily be explored in as little as 2 hours. This time, however, I decided to take a day trip to Valley of...

Winter in Shenandoah National Park

When most people think of taking an afternoon drive to the country, they imagine rustic settings, green leaves, and small towns. This past weekend, Mr. InnerCompass and I headed west with no specific destination in mind. Without a map or app guiding our way, we drove until our wandering had led us within a few miles of the northern entrance to Shenandoah National Park. As you will come to learn, it is nearly impossible to keep me away from a national park, so we followed the signs and drove on it. I had read on twitter last week that...
