Graves Mountain Apple Harvest There are only a handful of places and events around Northern Virginia that make me feel at home and one of those is the Graves Mountain Apple Harvest in Syria, Virginia. Located at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it’s gently rolling hills covered in rows of apples mimic those where I grew up in Wisconsin’s Driftless Area. My hometown is famous for their apple harvest and I spent many weekends working at one of the apple orchards during my youth. During a period of homesickness a few years ago, I started looking for...Read More

Growing up in Wisconsin’s Driftless Area, I was heavily influenced by family farms and a surging folk movement. My father descends from several generations of farmers and my parents had a dairy farm when I was born, but times were tough and they sold the farm a few short years later. Even after we sold the farm, we were still connected to farming through various relatives and community activities. As a result, I have always had deep appreciation for the struggles and perseverance of today’s family farmers. A friend recently suggested we take a trip to Blackwater Falls State Park in West Virginia, which happens to be one of his favorite day trip destinations. Being the die-hard national park nerd that I am, not celebrating the actual centennial on August 25, 2016, was not even an option for me. Hubs and I didn’t hesitate asking for the day off from our 9-to-5 jobs so that we could spend more than a few hours in the evening at a National Park Service unit. Trip Planning With only one full day to...Read More
We moved into our new house last November and have been slowly working on updating the paint and decor to match our tastes. Up next on my list is decorating the office. Hubs and I have established a “I do the decorating and he has final veto power” pact. So, I’ve decided to focus on a subtle nature theme, that focuses on our various adventures through photos, tchotchke’s, and a couple prints. After a couple trips to local decor stores, I still hadn’t found the perfect prints. I then turned by search online, which of course, led me to Etsy. Within minutes...Read More
